What Today's Game Means To Me ... by Wing Diamond - US Hockey Fan

Where do I start?  Let me start here, over the past month I have heard and read how much this game and the gold medal means to Canada and Canadian hockey fan.  While most of you grew up playing the game, I didn't but wanted to.  What a victory in today's game might mean a new rink being built in my old home town of Bremerton, WA.  What you Canadians don't have to contend with is also talking heads rag on the game calling it "Ice Soccer" and question our patriotism for loving it and hear hicks call in applauding like trained seals and say how they don't feel "American" watching it as apposed to football, baseball & basketball (Yes, I know that basketball was invented by a Canadian.  I'm the one that reminds these hicks of that).  Now for my Fellow Americans that feel that way, let me tell you a little story:

At the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria Germany.  A goaltender from the US team that spoke German was requested for a meeting with then German Chancellor Adolf Hitler.  Not knowing much about Herr Hitler he accepted.  At the meeting, he was berated by Der Fuhrer for about 5 min. about how soft and weak America is and how the Germans were going to crush the US.  After having heard enough of the Dictator's ramblings he stood up and looking right at Adolf said in a firm but even voice "Die Vereinigte Staaten wollen immer Deutchland bestelgen" (The United States will always defeat Germany!) and walked out.  The next day the US team did defeat Germany 1-0 in a game that was reported to be "Very Physical".  This US went on to win the Bronze Medal.  Think about that at 12:00pm PST and cheer on our boys.

Yes, I know that Canada is NOT Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia nor any of the theocratic states in the Middle East.  Not even close and for that I am eternally grateful.  But what a victory in today's game would mean is the ultimate respect from the Game's birthplace from which it has been begrudgingly given.  It will also mean the accumulation of many years of hard work and sacrifice by our boys and their families going to practice, buying equipment and hearing the jibes from their more "Conventional Sport" playing friends.  A win today may mean more real hockey talk and news on shows here in the US.

Now you know why I want this game so badly.

Go USA ... Beat Canada!

I'm Out!
